Texas: I’m Glad I Left Ya
Here are some stats about education in Texas.
- Verbal SAT scores: ranked 49th in the nation
- Math SAT scores: ranked 46th in the nation
- Percentage of adults with a high school diploma: ranked 50th in the nation
- 3 out of every 10 kids who start school don’t finish
- Only 20% of 8th graders are proficient at grade level in math
But Governor Rick Perry refuses federal money for education because… well, it’s not clear but it seems to be because there is now a requirement that the money actually be spent on kids.
When I was in high school, my buddy and I drove around the small TX town I grew up in listening to R.E.M.’s “Don’t Go Back to Rockville”. I would always wonder where I’d be in 25 years - if I’d be in Texas or somewhere else not wanting to go back.
I’m somewhere else, and damn glad of it.
